SYMPTOMS

What Causes Rectal Bleeding?

Rectal bleeding is a common symptom that can range from mild to serious. It often appears as bright red blood on toilet tissue, in the toilet bowl, or mixed with stool. The color and amount of blood can offer clues about the source—bright red blood typically indicates bleeding from the lower colon, rectum, or anus, while darker or maroon-colored blood may suggest a source higher in the digestive tract. Some patients may also experience accompanying symptoms such as pain during bowel movements, changes in stool consistency, abdominal discomfort, or fatigue from blood loss.

Concerns About Rectal Bleeding

While rectal bleeding can sometimes result from minor issues like hemorrhoids or anal fissures, it can also be a warning sign of more serious conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), polyps, diverticulosis, or colorectal cancer. Because the underlying causes vary widely, it’s important not to ignore rectal bleeding or assume it’s harmless. Early diagnosis allows for more effective treatment and can prevent complications from worsening over time.

Treatment for Rectal Bleeding

Treatment depends on the cause. Mild cases related to hemorrhoids or fissures may be managed with lifestyle changes—such as increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. Infections or inflammatory conditions may require medication, while structural issues like polyps or tumors may need endoscopic or surgical intervention. A gastroenterologist can perform diagnostic procedures such as a colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy to identify the exact source of bleeding and recommend an individualized treatment plan.

If you notice any form of rectal bleeding—especially if it’s persistent, accompanied by pain, dizziness, or changes in bowel habits—it’s important to schedule an evaluation. Prompt attention from a gastrointestinal specialist can provide peace of mind and ensure you receive the right care for your digestive health.

A few weeks ago I visited your office for a long overdue ‘routine’ colonoscopy. I was surprised how painless and unembarrassing it was. To my surprise, Dr. Berger told me he found a large polyp that he was able to remove. Yikes! Thank God everything turned out okay, but I am extremely grateful to you and your fantastic team (thanks Linda!) for helping me through this! You are all wonderful!

Sylvia B.

A sincere thanks to all of you for being so nice when I had my upper endoscopy. Words can’t express my appreciation to Dr. Berger for his understanding and patience. . . I delayed having this procedure for a long time, knowing this would be a problem – maybe insurmountable. I was so embarrassed at my difficulty, but you . . .solved the problem. You’re terrific and I am grateful.

Buck H., M.D.

PLEASE tell Dr. Berger how much I appreciated his efficiency and painless procedure. And tell his IV nurse that that was the most painless IV that I ever had. I was so impressed with all of you.
