GERD

SYMPTOMS

What Causes GERD?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, occurs when stomach acid or contents regularly flow back into the esophagus, the tube connecting your mouth and stomach. This acid reflux can irritate the esophageal lining, leading to the most common symptom—heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest that often worsens after eating or when lying down. Other symptoms can include regurgitation, chronic cough, hoarseness, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and a sensation of a lump in the throat. Over time, untreated GERD can interfere with daily comfort and sleep quality, making early management important.

Concerns About GERD

While occasional acid reflux is common, persistent or severe reflux can lead to complications. Chronic exposure to stomach acid can damage the esophagus, leading to esophagitis, ulcers, narrowing of the esophagus (strictures), or even Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that increases the risk of esophageal cancer. Because symptoms may mimic other digestive or cardiac conditions, proper evaluation by a gastroenterologist is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Treatment for GERD

Treatment for GERD typically begins with lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding trigger foods (spicy, acidic, or fatty meals), eating smaller portions, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding lying down soon after meals. Over-the-counter antacids or acid reducers may offer temporary relief, but prescription medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers may be necessary for long-term management. In more advanced or medication-resistant cases, minimally invasive surgical options like fundoplication or the LINX® procedure can help strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter and prevent reflux.

If you experience frequent heartburn, nighttime reflux, or swallowing difficulties, it’s important to seek medical attention. A gastroenterologist can perform diagnostic tests—such as endoscopy, pH monitoring, or esophageal manometry—to determine the severity of your condition and design a personalized treatment plan to restore comfort and protect your long-term digestive health.

A few weeks ago I visited your office for a long overdue ‘routine’ colonoscopy. I was surprised how painless and unembarrassing it was. To my surprise, Dr. Berger told me he found a large polyp that he was able to remove. Yikes! Thank God everything turned out okay, but I am extremely grateful to you and your fantastic team (thanks Linda!) for helping me through this! You are all wonderful!

A sincere thanks to all of you for being so nice when I had my upper endoscopy. Words can’t express my appreciation to Dr. Berger for his understanding and patience. . . I delayed having this procedure for a long time, knowing this would be a problem – maybe insurmountable. I was so embarrassed at my difficulty, but you . . .solved the problem. You’re terrific and I am grateful.

Buck H., M.D.

PLEASE tell Dr. Berger how much I appreciated his efficiency and painless procedure. And tell his IV nurse that that was the most painless IV that I ever had. I was so impressed with all of you.
